The SSL Revival 4000 is an all-analogue channel strip that rekindles the legendary sound of the early 1980s SL 4000 Series consoles. Revival 4000 is an all-analogue channel strip from Solid State Logic, delivering the unmistakable sound of the early 1980s SL 4000 Series consoles — a sound that set the industry standard and helped shape the music of iconic artists including Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Kate Bush, Pink Floyd, Prince, U2, and Metallica. Drawing on the revered circuitry of both the B and E Series consoles, the Revival 4000 offers the signature tone and sonic flexibility that form the very foundation of SSL's legacy, all in a compact 1U rack unit.

Key elements of its design:

  • Jensen Transformer E-Series Preamp Featuring a JT-115K-E Jensen transformer-balanced preamp, the Revival 4000 delivers richness and pristine clarity to your recordings. This circuit incorporates the very same Jensen component found in the original E Series channel strips, with separate input gain and trim controls so it can be set conservatively or pushed into pleasing harmonic distortion.
  • B Series One-Knob De-Esser Revival's De-Esser section deploys the original de-esser circuit from the iconic 4000 B compressor/limiter, delivering a 10:1 ratio and 7 kHz high-pass filtered side-chain, enabling broadband compression that's precisely triggered by sibilance — ideal for taming harsh vocals, drums, or other aggressive sources.
  • E Series Class-A VCA Dynamics The iconic dynamics section that defined the sound of the 1980s stays true to the original 4000 E design — a discrete Class A VCA compressor, expander, and gate with selectable soft or hard knee response, a fast attack mode, and a choice of logarithmic or linear release curves.
  • Switchable Brown/Black Knob EQ Possibly the standout feature is the versatile four-band EQ, switchable between the Brown Knob '02' and Black Knob '242' versions. This same general design has been used on countless records, but here with two distinct personalities in one box.
  • Flexible Signal Routing Across the panel, processors can be reordered to suit your musical needs — filters to input, dynamics and De-Esser post-EQ, insert to output — along with EQ/filters-to-sidechain options for enhanced creative control.
  • Comprehensive Front-End Controls Additional front-end controls include +48V phantom power, polarity reverse, a 20 dB pad, and line-level input, making the Revival 4000 suitable for use across a wide range of input sources.
  • Insert & Stereo Linking On the back of the unit, a balanced insert point makes it easy to patch additional processing into the signal path, while an external sidechain input and stereo link functionality allow two units to be used as a stereo pair.

Writing for Tape Op, the reviewer summed it up as essentially a single SSL 4000 E channel strip shoehorned into a 1U rack space with additional features — a Jensen transformer 4000 E mic pre, an impressive one-knob De-Ess from the 4000 B, and a full E Series discrete Class A VCA dynamics section — singling out the versatile four-band EQ with its switchable "brown knob" or "black knob" flavors as possibly the standout feature.
