Every time I come across a Dark Fire, I end up buying it. They are one of the strangest and most ambitious Les Pauls Gibson ever put into production, and complete examples are getting noticeably harder to find. This is the third one I have owned, and it is easily the most complete of the three.

Visually, this one is killer. The transparent red finish lets a ton of figuring show through the top, with darker edges and black hardware giving it a much more aggressive look than a traditional burst. The carbon-fiber-style pickup covers and fretboard inlays, black plastics and Dark Fire truss-rod cover make it instantly recognizable. The satin-finished back is also remarkably clean for a guitar this old, especially considering how easily these darker satin surfaces show handling wear. Some light marks but nothing substantial at all.

The bigger story with a Dark Fire is everything happening electronically. I went through the guitar carefully and tested the piezo system, automatic tuning system and the rest of the onboard electronics, and everything is operating properly. That is important with these because finding one that still has the original technology intact and actually functioning is becoming much harder than simply finding the guitar itself.

This one has also already had the battery issue addressed. The original batteries used in these guitars have become a known weak point with age, so this one is running the updated Tronical workaround battery setup. The original Gibson battery and charger are still included with the guitar, so you get the original pieces along with a practical solution that allows the system to continue being used.

Despite all of the technology packed into it, it still feels like a really good Les Paul when you actually sit down and play it. The action is low, the setup passed my inspection as it sits, and intonation is spot on. At only 7.72 pounds on my scale, it is also exceptionally comfortable for a Les Paul. The fretboard and frets are both in excellent shape, and the guitar feels effortless across the neck.

The electronics give you a ridiculous amount to play with, but I actually enjoy it even before getting into all of that. The magnetic pickups have plenty of punch and clarity, while the piezo adds an entirely different texture that you simply do not get from a normal Les Paul. Everything tested cleanly and responded exactly as it should.

The completeness is what makes this particular one interesting to me. A Dark Fire with missing electronics, a dead tuning system or half of the original accessories gone is a completely different proposition. This one still has the technology that made the model so unusual in the first place, it works, and the updated battery setup takes care of one of the biggest practical problems these guitars developed as they aged.

It is also just a cool piece of Gibson history. The Dark Fire came from that period when Gibson was willing to throw an almost absurd amount of technology into a Les Paul and see what happened. Whether you want to actually use all of it or simply want one of the more unusual production Gibsons of the era, finding one this complete and this clean is getting increasingly difficult.
