There's a particular sound that runs through some of the most atmospheric guitar music of the late '70s and early '80s — a slow, liquid sweep that feels less like an effect and more like the room itself is breathing. That sound traces back to one circuit: the Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress, designed by David Cockerell in the mid-1970s around the newly available Reticon SAD1024 bucket-brigade chip. It became the flanger of choice for David Gilmour, whose Mistress-soaked textures colored Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut, and for Andy Summers, who built much of The Police's signature shimmer, including the swirl on "Walking on the Moon" - same pedal.

The catch with those originals is that they were, by most accounts, a little unruly; noisy, prone to volume drop when engaged, and increasingly hard to keep alive as the SAD1024 chip fell out of production. The Hartman Analog Flanger exists to solve that problem without losing the thing that made the Mistress special in the first place. It's a faithful recreation of that original signal path, built with tighter modern components to quiet down the noise floor and eliminate the level jump between bypassed and engaged signal with true bypass, no volume dip, same wide, syrupy sweep goodness.
