Infinity 1001A 3-Driver Loudspeakers. Serviced and cosmetically restored by Upstate Vintage Speaker Lab.

Technical Design Overview:

The Infinity 1001A is a 1970s 3-driver system utilizing a low-order crossover design. The 12-inch treated paper woofer operates without a low-pass electrical filter, relying on its natural mechanical and acoustic roll-off characteristics to blend with the high-frequency drivers. The enclosure is a front-ported, bass-reflex design featuring a cylindrical port tube to tune lower frequencies and manage internal air compliance. High frequencies are handled by twin 1-inch dome tweeters arranged in a front-and-rear firing configuration.

Service & Restoration Log:

Crossover Calibration: Audited the original high-pass film capacitors. Bench testing indicated downward value drift, measuring at 6.34 µF and 6.7 µF. Parallel film bypass capacitors (0.47 µF and 0.1 µF) were added to restore the circuit to the exact factory-specified value of 6.8 µF (1300 Hz acoustic crossover frequency).

Cabinet Refinishing: Repaired a few areas that had slivers of veneer missing. See images. Stripped old surface contaminants and water stains from the walnut wood veneer using mineral spirits and steel wool before applying a wood conditioner and wax sealant.

Port & Baffle Maintenance: Cleaned the front baffles and applied flat black paint to the plain cardboard port tubes to match the black baffle surface.

Enclosure Seals: Removed degraded original frame gaskets and installed fresh 1/4-inch closed-cell foam sealing tape beneath the metal woofer baskets to eliminate air leaks and mechanical cabinet rattles.

Controls & Inputs Serviced: Flushed the rear rotary high-frequency potentiometer switches with DeoxIT to eliminate contact resistance and signal dropouts.

Internal Damping Optimization: (Someone had previously been into these speakers). Removed dense polyfill blockages from the port tubes and reduced the tightly packed internal cabinet polyfill volume by approximately 50% to restore proper factory air velocity through the port.

Grilles & Emblems: Cleaned the original black fabric grilles, preserved the original floating wood backing blocks, and mounted period-correct reproduction black-and-silver Infinity logo plates.

Lab Soak Test: Operated the speakers under standard bench loads for 80 continuous hours to confirm component thermal stability and signal linearity before listing.
