Vintage Telefunken ELA M 251 Non-E – Serial #842

Original vintage Telefunken ELA M 251 Non-E tube condenser microphone, made in Austria. This is the Non-E version using the AC701 tube.

I purchased this microphone from Blackbird Studio in Nashville in 2008, and it has been used professionally in a recording studio since then.

Sound

In terms of sound, this microphone has a character that I personally find extremely difficult to compare with modern microphones.

I also own and use a Sony C-800G, and while the C-800G is an outstanding modern microphone in its own right, in my personal experience its modern sonic character simply does not compare to what this vintage ELA M 251 delivers.

The 251 has an exceptionally elegant and beautiful tone, with remarkable detail, resolution, and a sense of depth that I find very difficult to achieve with modern microphones. Despite the noise issue described below, this extraordinary sonic character is the reason I have continued to use it on professional recordings over the years.

Condition / Important Disclosure

The microphone is operational and has been used on professional recordings. However, it currently exhibits a noticeable high-frequency hiss/noise around the 8 kHz region. I have continued to use the microphone by reducing the affected frequency with EQ, but the buyer should assume that professional inspection/service may be required.

The microphone itself has not been modified or altered during my ownership. I have not attempted to replace or modify its internal components. Detailed photos of the capsule and internal microphone assembly are included so prospective buyers can inspect their condition.

There is a small chip/crack near the serial number window on the microphone body, as shown in the photos.

Power Supply

The power supply included with the microphone appears to be a vintage AKG/Telefunken-type supply and was supplied with the microphone when I purchased it from Blackbird Studio.

I cannot independently verify that it is the microphone's original factory-matched power supply, so I am not representing it as such.

The PSU was previously professionally serviced and tuned by an experienced technician. According to the work performed at the time, German wire and vintage solder were used, and the tube in the PSU was replaced with an older vintage tube. Detailed internal photographs of the PSU are included so buyers can inspect the components and workmanship directly.

Please note the following regarding the PSU:

- The power indicator lamp does not illuminate.

- Of the four PSU case screws, one spins freely and does not tighten properly.

- The PSU shows age-related cosmetic wear, surface marks, discoloration, and some soiling, as visible in the photographs.

The microphone, PSU, wooden case, and cable show cosmetic wear consistent with their age and professional studio use. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact cosmetic and physical condition.
