INTRO: The elusive Oberheim OB-1. One of the RAREST synthesizers in existence. According to my research, ONLY 250-500 units were ever made!
I am sure if you are looking at this ad you know what it is. This is an extremely rare opportunity to get your hands on one, especially one in this condition! It is a museum grade, and in exceptional condition. It comes in its vintage carrying chest (we will box the chest, to protect it).
WE HAVE A LARGE SELECTION OF CARRYING CASES!!!
Hard, soft, large, small…any kind; AT GREAT PRICES!
If interested, please check our other listings (under our profile). We have MANY posted.
And if you decided to purchase one, we can ship them together to save you money on shipping. Please let us know in advance, so we can make that possible by merging the two transactions into one.
CONDITION: This MUSICIAN'S DREAM-GEAR is FULLY FUNCTIONAL, and I would say it is in EXCELLENT condition (especially for its age)! However, and respectfully, since everyone has different standards; on the cosmetics, please don't take my word for it! I'll let the pictures do the talking. 🙂
SERVICE HISTORY: I am sure that if you are looking at this item, you know everything about it. So, I will first tell you about this particular gem:
IT HAS JUST BEEN FULLY INSPECTED/SERVICED AND IS READY FOR A NEW HOME!
The following services were just done, which cost us over $350!
IF you find another one for less than what ours is selling for, and since most of the used ones out there, that are supposed to be "fully functional", turn out NOT to be; you will then need to find someone who would work on these (which is very hard nowadays), and then who knows how much it would cost to make it fully functional??! CONDITION IS EVERYTHING!
SERVICES DONE:
- Full inspection
- Load tested for 2 hours
- Key-bed fully serviced
- All knobs serviced
- All switches serviced
- All contacts cleaned
- Cleaned inside and out
Additional services (such as recapping the PSU or replacing the key bushings) are available upon request and for a fee. Though nothing needs to be done to this synth (as it stands, it needs nothing and is fully functional), some people are still interested in getting those done. If you would like anything done prior to delivery, let us know and we will work out the details.
What makes this gem extra unique and special, is the shape it is in! It has been well preserved, and is in PRISTINE condition (at least for a 48-year-old synth). This wonder is adored by all collectors, and will keep on going up in value.
Needless to say, being in this condition, everything works perfectly, as it was when it rolled off the factory line. But still, we had it checked out by a professional to make sure. And since it has spent most of its life in a dark and cushy box inside a vault (previous owner was very meticulous), it passed with flying colors, only needing the usual “wake-up” services.
The previous owner was a synth collector, so it has been pampered all its life, barely played with, and mostly tucked away securely with the rest of his collectables.
This beast has the ability to easily blow our giant speakers along with the roof, with its monstrous and unique PHAT BASS! What a machine!!!
This is a great opportunity for anyone who has been wanting one, to play with, or to add to their collection.
Don't hesitate; this opportunity won't last long...
SOME INFO ABOUT THIS GEM:
One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL and PHATTEST synths ever built... Any angel you look at it, it is gorgeous; and BOLD! The first analog synth to have memory for patches!
From Wikipedia:
“Notable users of the OB-1 were the composer and musician Vince Clarke and the bands Tangerine Dream, Rush, and The Grid.[1] A 2014 feature on the French radio station France Inter claimed that the OB-1 had been used by the Star Wars sound engineer Ben Burtt to create the voice of R2-D2 and that the name of another Star Wars character, Obi-Wan Kenobi, derives from a transliteration of "OB-1"
The Oberheim OB-1 was a monophonic, programmable, analog synthesizer introduced by Oberheim Electronics in 1978. It originally sold for $1,895 (in today's money, over $10,000,00!) and was the first analog synthesizer capable of storing patches. The design was a replacement for the previous generation of Oberheim SEM (Synthesizer Expansion Module) based instruments and intended to be used for live performance.”
From Gear Space.com:
“The Oberheim OB-1 in my opinion is one of the best looking and best sounding synths ever made. But it is very rare and not many people did have the possibility of having or even playing one. So it remains practically unknown, unmentioned, almost forgotten in every discussion about analog synths. That said, my intention with this video was to take a look into this classic designed and classic sounding synth. If you can get over my English (I have to choose between speaking veeeery sloooooowly or speaking at normal speed with lots of mistakes, and... I went for time saving), you may find a useful explanation of how the OB-1 works and, more important, how it sounds. I hope you enjoy it.” (I included his video below)
From SYNTH.MARKET:
“This small analog monophonic synthesizer strongly influenced the sound of pop music of the 1980s. The main feature that explains the popularity of OB-1 - the ability to save settings in one of eight presets. All functional blocks are built on discrete elements (late representatives of the OB series used specialized CEM chips). The synthesizer has two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO), each of which has an independent frequency controller, a micro-tuning, an octave switch. There are triangular and rectangular waveforms available that can be transformed by built-in converters into saw, reverse saw, meander with different duty cycles and intermediate forms. For modulation, an LFO is provided that produces a sine or square wave. The modulation signal can be sent to the cutoff frequency of VCF or modulate (FM and PW) VCO. The voltage controlled low-pass filter (LP VCF) has cutoff, resonance and modulation depth adjustment. There is a selection of the number of VCF stages, which allows you to obtain a slope of 12 or 24 dB per octave. A keyboard tracking mode is also provided (higher notes have a higher cutoff frequency).OB-1 has two built-in ADSR envelope generators. One of them is dedicated to VCF, the second - to VCA. The synthesizer got a non-dynamic keyboard with 37 keys. The "transpose" switch allows you to change the pitch within three octaves. Pitch bend control has an original implementation - it is carried out with a lever.OB-1 was used by Supertramp, Electronic Dream Planet, Tangerine Dream, Sky, Herbie Hancock, Rush. Country of origin / production: USA”
BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE VIDEO; IT'S FUN! 😜
(Please keep in mind that the video is just a generic one from YouTube, and is not made by us, or this particular keyboard. 🙂)

A LITTLE ABOUT ME (Kevin):
I am a 46-year-old, with a degree in Electronics Engineering, who LOVES Synthesizers, sounds, Music, and Electronics in general. Even though I do not work in the Electronics industry; I have always loved/adored it, never separated from it; and as a hobby, I collect and restore them; and sometimes sell them to make room for others...
I've been around Synthesizers for over three decades, have serviced/restored hundreds of them, and have hundreds of the rarest/most sought-after synthesizers/keyboards available for sale. (which is one of the largest selections of used synthesizers found in one place!)
WHY BUY FROM US? (full version)
When you're buying a vintage (or just a used) car, does the condition matter? Of course it does! 😊 Are two used cars that are the same make and model the same? Would all similar (year, make and model) cars sell at the same price? No; there are many factors that would decide what price they fetch. Mileage, body, functionality, extra options, service history, past use... and one of the most important ones is CONDITION, which is everything! That is the reason a factory certified used Mercedes, fetches at least $4000 more, than the one you'd buy from a private seller you find on Craigslist.😊That's why when it comes to buying a used car, price is not everything... And buying a secondhand synthesizer, is no different than purchasing a vintage or used car.
Yes, I'm proud of my children for sure. Mainly because when it comes to used keyboards and synths (just like used cars), condition is EVERYTHING! I have searched hard, hand-picked and collected only the best of the best that are in pristine condition (majority of them); and then had them professionally inspected, serviced/repaired (if needed), reprogrammed/restored (if needed), detailed...
There's definitely value in that. On average, we spend about 5 hours on every single keyboard, before offering it for sale, and if they're not serviced, or if they don't pass the inspection, WE DON’T SELL THEM! We believe in selling ONLY high-quality items, to ensure that our clients are very happy with their purchase, which produces repeats, referrals and customers for life! 😁Not to mention the professional musicians that need to count on their instrument's reliability, as their livelihood depends on it. We have the biggest respect/admiration for the professional musicians, and want them to have peace of mind when they step on the stage…
In contrast, when it comes to USED GEAR FROM OTHER SOURCES, including the major retailers, you'd have to keep your fingers crossed until it arrives... And most often, they are NOT WHAT THEY WERE DESCRIBED TO BE, and most often, there is something wrong with the gear (as I am sure you, just like me, have experienced many times before). And often enough turn into headaches or heartaches...
However, you can rest assured, that if you buy from us, you will get a fully functional gear, and you'll get to see tons of details and pictures, before making up your mind! 🙂
No retailer would service them prior to the sale (they don’t even wipe it down!), as it costs an additional $300-$800 (or more)! Not to mention finding a Synth Tech is extremely difficult/costly nowadays. And that is what we do, as a labor of love! We do this because we really enjoy ANYTHING and EVERYTHING about synthesizers! Buying, selling, fixing, collecting, playing...we just love them! 😍
And finally, CUSTOMER SERVICE, which is also one of the major factors in retail/buying. We try our very best to provide everyone with the best possible service and experience; a fun one! We always stay on top of all communications in a timely manner, even/specially after the sale, which is where most sellers often disappear, or just don't care/reply...
Also, we are a HUGE believer in preserving, not just synthesizers (especially vintage!), but also our planet! So, we recycle EVERYTHING, and re-use as many parts as we can (fully functioning parts from donors), to help reduce our carbon foot-print.
If you've made it this far on this very long scroll 😄, you have our biggest thank you!
