Video: 10 Who Riffs With the Aclam Windmiller Pre

The Who once set the world record for the loudest concert of all time, holding the official Guiness record for eight years. One might think they had some high-gain drive units to help them win such honors, but listen back to many of their classic mid-'60s recordings and you'll hear that, while loud, the guitars often had fairly low levels of gain.

Much of Pete Townshend's drive tone at the time came not from a pedal but from a preamp circuit found in a standalone reverb tank, his Grampian Reverberation Unit 636. Luckily, Aclam Guitars have recreated that circuit, conveniently, in a pedal: The Windmiller.

The pedal's controls consist of just a Gain knob, a Lo Cut, and a Hi Cut, letting the simple and powerful preamp circuit speak for itself. So we thought there's no better way to show off what it does than ripping through 10 Who riffs.

Aclam—the makers of the Dr. Roberts Overdrive and the '60s/'70s-inspired Cinnamon Drive—are no strangers to this sonic era, and with The Windmiller they have again created a kind of living time capsule of tone.
