The Yamaha DX9, introduced in 1983, is a digital programmable algorithm synthesizer that employs 4-operator FM synthesis. It features a 61-key non-weighted keyboard and offers 16-note polyphony. The instrument includes 20 internal memory slots for storing user-created voices, with additional storage capabilities via cassette tape.

Recently, a popular YouTuber conducted a comparison of identical presets between the DX7 and the DX9. Despite the DX9 having two fewer operators than the DX7, the results were nothing short of impressive. Thanks to its equally sophisticated algorithms, the DX9 delivers sound quality that is on par with its more famous sibling. In fact, it’s hard to argue that the DX9 doesn’t sound just as good as the DX7. Additionally, the DX9's high-quality converters provide a richness and depth that put even more modern instruments like the Korg OPSIX to shame (and I can personally vouch for this, as I own both).

This makes the DX9 not only an affordable entry into Yamaha's iconic FM synthesis but also a highly capable instrument in its own right, with an undeniably professional sound.

Condition and Functionality

Considering its age (released in 1985), this Yamaha DX-9 is in impressive overall condition. One notable cosmetic detail is that the lower right front corner appears to have been broken and carefully repaired by a previous owner. Aside from this, the unit shows only a few superficial scratches, which are minimal given its vintage status.

The DX-9 retains its original, classy dark brown finish, similar to the iconic DX7, with which it shares most of its features. The keyboard remains excellent and responsive, the buttons are fully functional, and the backlit LCD screen is clear and easy to read. This instrument is a fantastic example of Yamaha’s classic FM synthesis and has been well-maintained over the years.
