Synthés numériques

Digital synths are synthesizers that use digital signals (computerized signals) to control their oscillators and filters. In a way, they’re essentially computers with a keyboard or other interface that makes the sounds synthesizers are known for.

The best digital synthesizer for a beginner is one that is affordable, well-made, and inspires the player. Popular affordable models include the Korg Volca FM, the Novation Circuit, and the Arturia MicroFreak.

The first digital synthesizer to be commercially released with any success was the Yamaha DX7. It is still one of the best-selling synthesizers in history and is known for its cold, glassy sound.

The biggest difference in digital synths vs. analog synths is how the oscillator is controlled. With an analog synth, the oscillator is voltage-controlled whereas digital synths are numerically controlled via binary 1s and 0s. In other words, a digital synthesizer is more akin to a computer with a controller and interface.
