Leo Aschauer Mittenwald Cello 1928 - Reddish-brown varnish with highly figured/flamed maple

Beautiful full-size cello bearing a Leo Aschauer, Mittenwald 1928 label.

I have owned this cello for approximately 10 years. Before me, the instrument was owned by renowned Swedish cellist and multi-instrumentalist Svante Henryson.

The cello has a beautiful reddish-brown varnish with highly figured/flamed maple back and sides. It is a wonderful professional instrument with plenty of character and has been carefully kept during my ownership.

The instrument naturally shows signs of age and use consistent with a cello approaching 100 years old. Please see the photographs for its cosmetic condition.

I do not currently have a modern independent certificate of attribution, so the instrument is being described according to its label and provenance. Prospective buyers are welcome to have it inspected by a qualified violin/cello expert.

This is a special instrument that I have owned for many years, and I am selling it simply because it is no longer getting the use it deserves.

Professional Luthier Assessment & Setup

The cello was recently examined by renowned Spanish master luthier Rafael Melenchón, who operates workshops in Madrid and Dénia. Melenchón is highly regarded for his craftsmanship in fine string instruments, including his celebrated replica of the Montagnana “Sleeping Beauty” cello.

He was particularly impressed by the excellent quality of the wood used in this instrument.

As part of the professional setup, the bridge and soundpost were replaced, and the fingerboard angle was corrected to optimize the instrument’s playability and performance.
