ESP is one of the brands that helped shape the sound of modern rock and metal. With its LTD Deluxe Series, the Japanese manufacturer made high-end performance accessible, delivering instruments capable of competing with guitars costing significantly more. The early-2000s Made in Korea Deluxe models have earned an outstanding reputation among musicians for their exceptional build quality, remarkable reliability, and superb value for money. The LTD Viper-1000 FM is unquestionably one of the finest examples from this era.
Inspired by the iconic asymmetrical double-cutaway design that made the Viper famous, this Deluxe model boasts a striking appearance thanks to its gorgeous See Thru Black finish over a beautifully figured flamed maple top. Elegant body binding and the distinctive pearl/abalone Flag Inlays, exclusive to early LTD Deluxe models, complete its premium aesthetic. Its set-neck mahogany construction, combined with the traditional 24.75-inch scale length, delivers excellent sustain, powerful attack, and outstanding playing comfort. The Thin U neck profile feels fast without being overly slim, making it equally at home with crushing rhythm work and highly technical lead playing.
For electronics, ESP chose the legendary EMG 81 / EMG 85 active pickup combination. The bridge pickup delivers razor-sharp precision, tight low end, and aggressive mids that excel under high gain, while the neck pickup provides greater warmth, sustain, and fluidity for expressive solos, articulate clean passages, and rich arpeggios. Even at extreme gain settings, the guitar retains exceptional clarity and note definition, which explains why this pickup combination has remained an industry standard for rock, hard rock, and metal players for decades.
The hardware matches the instrument's premium pedigree. A locking TonePros Tune-O-Matic bridge ensures outstanding tuning stability and maximum vibration transfer, while the high-quality Sperzel locking tuners provide exceptional tuning precision and reliability. Every component reflects the solid engineering and attention to detail that made Korean-built LTD Deluxe guitars from this period so highly regarded.
More than twenty years after its introduction, the ESP LTD Viper-1000 FM STBLK remains a highly sought-after instrument. Combining outstanding craftsmanship, effortless playability, and a powerful, unmistakable tone, it represents one of the finest periods of ESP's Korean production. A true professional-grade guitar, equally at home on stage or in the studio, and fully capable of standing alongside instruments costing considerably more.
