dbx 160A mono compressor/limiter — the classic VCA punch box — fitted with the optional Jensen output transformer.

The Jensen mod

The 160A ships from the factory with an electronically balanced, transformerless output, but the PCB has dedicated pads for the optional 1:1 output transformer that dbx itself recommends in the manual. This unit has a genuine Jensen JT-123-DBX (Made in USA, lot 170906) soldered into those pads — clean, correct install, no cut traces, no hacks.

What it does: puts iron in the output stage. A touch of warmth and density, a slightly softer top end, and true galvanic isolation on the XLR output (kills ground loops). Exactly what you want when the stock 160A feels too clinical — especially on kick, snare, bass and vocals.

Fully reversible: the transformer can be desoldered and the unit returned to stock at any time.

- Balanced XLR and 1/4" in/out, unbalanced 1/4" out, ground lift, detector (sidechain) input, stereo strapping for linking two units

- Full LED metering: input/output level and gain reduction

Condition - very good

Fully tested and working as it should — quiet, all switches, pots and LEDs functional. Cosmetically good for its age: a few light scratches on the top cover (see photos), front panel clean, all original knobs. From a smoke-free studio. IEC power cable included.
