This compact drum machine belongs to the Kawai R-series, which also includes the R-100 (also used by Jan Hammer during its Miami Vice days), the R-50 and the R-50 III.
This particular version offers the desirable Simmons-style drums, orchestral stabs and bass sounds that were notoriously used in late 80s cult industrial music (i.e. several Wax Trax records).
In addition to the gritty 12-bit PCM samples, this machine offers three built-in digital effects: gate, delay and flanger.
Its MIDI connectivity is ideal for sequencing, and also lets you input velocity through an external device.

The model for sale is in great cosmetic conditions, with just a couple minor blemishes. The screen is perfectly readable, but has a small stain which I tried to highlight in the last picture. It's hardly visible, I had to use the flash to try and capture it.
The machine works without flaws and unwanted noises. The internal battery has been replaced with a new one, in a more convenient battery holder.
Power supply (12 V, center negative) is not included.
