HISTORY WITH XLR

Developed in West Germany during the 1960s, the TD 20 was built for reliability, clarity, and ease of use in professional environments. Its long body, integrated mount, and striking mesh design gave it both practical versatility and a strong visual identity. Even today, it remains a fascinating example of how thoughtful mechanical construction and acoustic design come together to shape both sound and character.

OPTICAL CONDITION

Exceptionally clean used condition.
The body is remarkably well preserved, with original paint fully intact and virtually no visible wear. The Telefunken logo remains sharp and complete, and the mesh grille have a few minor bents. Overall, a very well-maintained and visually outstanding example.

TECHNICAL CONDITION

perfect performance compared to other TD 20 microphones.

  • Capsule serviced and cleaned
  • Modified to standard XLR connector

BUILD & DESIGN
The TD 20 features a long plastic body , paired with a large, ventilated steel mesh grille. Its integrated boom-thread mount is a highly practical feature, allowing direct mounting without additional holders. This example has been professionally converted to XLR, ensuring compatibility with modern equipment.

Capsule
This microphone contains the later capsule revision, identifiable by its larger, symmetrical capsule housing mounted within its own dedicated internal support structure. Unlike earlier versions where the capsule was attached directly to the rear housing, this design suspends the capsule within a plastic frame supported from all sides. Acoustic damping foam is positioned on both sides of the capsule structure to control internal reflections and resonance. This foam has been replaced during service to preserve proper acoustic damping behavior.

The capsule remains an end-address dynamic design, with sound entering primarily from the top. The surrounding grille allows some off-axis interaction, contributing to the microphone’s spatial and tonal behavior.

Circuit
Passive dynamic moving-coil design, requiring no external power. The microphone uses a traditional dynamic transducer coupled directly to a balanced output via its internal wiring.

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

The TD 20 delivers punchy, present midrange with an articulate high-frequency shelf that never veers into harshness. Its transient response makes it particularly useful for detailed sources like guitar cabs, finger percussion, and close snare applications. There’s a hint of vintage saturation—a soft compression and tonal glue—that adds character without dulling nuance. The proximity response is rich and musical, lending itself well to close-miked vocal and instrumental sources. Its reach and clarity are quite surprising given the era of production, making it a strong candidate for ambient stereo or distant room applications when paired creatively.

FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Effective Range: 76 Hz – 12,400 Hz

The Telefunken TD 20 stands as a testament to West German microphone engineering, combining thoughtful mechanical design with practical usability. This later capsule revision reflects Telefunken’s evolving internal construction methods, with improved capsule support and acoustic isolation.

this particular unit is very close to full original performance specifications, it remains fully functional and offers a uniquely colored sonic signature
