About this listing
This is a 1986 Fender Japan ST-456 Stratocaster in Black, part of the mid-’80s MIJ Boxer-era lineup. These are cool guitars because they sit outside the usual vintage-reissue lane Fender Japan is known for, with a more modern HSS-style configuration, simplified controls, and that fast, player-focused feel that makes the old Fujigen-built Japanese Fenders so appealing. The black finish gives it a stripped-down, stealthy look, especially with the black pickguard and HSS pickup layout. It has the right amount of age and wear for a nearly 40-year-old Japanese Strat—definitely not a case queen, but it still presents well and has a lot of character. The rosewood board, dot inlays, vintage-style headstock, and chrome tremolo hardware keep it feeling familiar, while the bridge humbucker gives it more muscle than a traditional three-single-coil Strat. The pickup configuration is a big part of what makes this one fun. You get the familiar Strat-style single-coil tones in the neck and middle positions, but the bridge humbucker adds a thicker, meatier voice that makes the guitar much more versatile. It handles clean tones, classic Strat textures, and more driven rock sounds really well, and the 5-way switching keeps everything easy to use.The neck is in very good condition and feels comfortable in the hand. The scale length feels right, the action is good, the frets are very good, and the guitar plays and sounds excellent. Intonation is spot on, the electronics test properly, and it has that solid, resonant feel people chase in older MIJ Fender instruments.Condition is good overall and best described as player-grade. There are several chips, scratches, dings, and finish marks throughout, including visible wear on the body edges and back. Nothing appears structural, nothing affects playability, and the guitar ultimately presents well for its age, but the cosmetic wear is clearly worth noting. The neck is very good, the fretboard is clean, and the guitar is fully functional and ready to play.Includes a gig bag. What stood out to me1986 Fender Japan ST-456 StratocasterMid-’80s MIJ Boxer-era modelFujigen-era Japanese Fender buildBlack finish with black pickguardHSS-style pickup configurationMeaty bridge humbucker toneGreat Strat feel with added versatilitySimple volume/tone control layout5-way pickup selectorRosewood fretboardVery good neck conditionVery good fret conditionClean fretboardElectronics test properlySpot-on intonationPlays and sounds excellentCool older MIJ Fender playerHonest player-grade cosmetic conditionChips, scratches, and dings notedNo structural issues foundIncludes gig bagLike all my guitars, this one’s been cared for and dialed in—no guesswork, no surprises, just a great instrument that’s ready to play.
