A fantastic example of a late-‘70s Marshall JMP 2204 Master Model Lead, built during one of the most sought-after periods of Marshall production. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the 2204 was Marshall’s answer to players wanting the unmistakable sound of a cranked Super Lead at more manageable volumes. The result was one of the most influential amplifiers ever made.

By 1979, the 2204 had become a staple of the hard rock scene, delivering the aggressive crunch, punchy midrange and tight low end that would shape countless recordings throughout the late ’70s and ’80s. Simpler, more controllable and often more practical than its 100-watt sibling, the 2204 remains a favourite amongst players looking for classic Marshall tone with outstanding touch sensitivity and manageable stage volume.

Tone

The 2204 occupies a unique place in Marshall history. It retains the openness and authority of the earlier non-master volume amplifiers while introducing an extra gain stage that allows rich overdrive at more sensible volume levels.

Expect tight low end, aggressive upper-midrange bite and the unmistakable harmonic complexity that made late-’70s Marshalls legendary. Clean tones are bright, dynamic and articulate, while increasing the preamp gain delivers everything from classic rock crunch through to the early foundations of heavy metal.

The 50-watt output section has a slightly softer feel and earlier power valve saturation compared to a 100-watt 2203, making it exceptionally rewarding to play. Whether you’re chasing AC/DC, early Van Halen, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest or countless NWOBHM tones, the 2204 delivers the authentic sound of the era.

Many players consider the late-’70s 2204 to be one of the finest all-round Marshall amplifiers ever produced.

Condition

A well-preserved vintage example showing honest signs of use consistent with its age. The amplifier retains the character and appearance expected from a genuine 1979 JMP that has spent its life being played rather than stored away.
