The overdrive runs an analog op-amp circuit with soft clipping — tight and articulate rather than saturated and loose, which suits the picking precision Loomis plays with. The boost adds up to 20dB of clean output, which is enough to push the front end of an amp hard or simply cut through a dense mix.
