The Manley Variable Mu is a mastering fixture that achieves true gain reduction by re-biasing a 5670 dual triode vacuum tube—the same principle as the legendary Fairchild 670. Choose between a transparent soft-knee COMPRESS (1.5:1) or a sharper LIMIT (4:1 up to 20:1), or push the input without compression for thick, rich tube saturation.
Key Features of This Unit:
- Stepped DUAL INPUT Attenuator: Detented control for precise, recallable settings, making it ideal for mastering and matched revisions.
- HP Side-Chain Filter: Switchable per channel to stop heavy low-end (like kick drums) from pumping the entire mix.
- True All-Tube Path: Fully differential circuitry with custom Manley nickel-lamination transformers in mu-metal cans (flat from 20 Hz to 25 kHz).
- Comprehensive Control: 5-step recovery (0.2 to 8 seconds), variable attack (25 to 70 ms), continuously variable threshold, and SEP / LINK stereo switching.
- Premium Hardware: Dual illuminated Sifam gain-reduction meters, hard-wire bypass per channel, and balanced 600 Ω XLR I/O.
