The CHISWICK REACH VALVE COMPRESSOR

  • all-tube signal path – no PCBs, no ICs, no solid state stages in the signal path!
  • 4 massive input & output transformers: fully balanced class A topology for extended frequency response and superb handling of hot levels
  • 7 valves carefully matched to obtain lowest noise and distortion
  • the ratio is a variable 'mu' characteristic with one of the most pleasantly enveloping knees on the market.
  • unique, proprietary 'thump' function: sidechain modification that allows quick transients to pass while applying smooth compression to the sustained parts of the signal – a mastering favourite!
  • link or independent
  • all controls are continuous

The Chiswick Reach Comp follows ideas based on classic Altec compressors, but has proprietary feedback improvements which bring down distortion and detailed control options often missing from one-knob vari mu designs. Its all-valve circuit brings one of the most satisfying audio massaging characteristics – dip several db into the signal before any pumping artefacts become noticeable (expressly one of its development's goals). Absolutely exceptional.

Good reviews can be found through Google – lots of British users from rock to reggae, but this is also the go-to main compressor in the setups of electronic music mastering luminaries such as Rashad Becker or Keith Tenniswood.

I have both, the Anamod AM670 & the Chiswick – I'll be selling since they serve the same function in my setting. One of these is more than enough – whichever sells first, and I'll keep the other. Please note: The heavy duty power transformer emits a light acoustic hum (acoustically! not in the signal path!), particularly during warm up. In my set up this is inaudible when racked.

"I found this to be an extraordinarily friendly-sounding compressor. There was something immensely satisfying about the sound, which had more warmth and depth than any transistor or hybrid transistor/valve unit. Across a main mix this unit really excels, unobtrusively reducing dynamic range if necessary, or sounding warm and squidgy – like putting your mix through rich chocolate gateau. Frequency response is superb and down only 3dB at 55kHz."

Technical condition: it works marvellously. The inner white meter panels move a little back and forth when the unit is tilted (for instance during shipping). I've marked it in one photo. Tilt it back before rackmounting, so they don't touch the needles.
Cosmetics: some light marks, chips and scratches around edges, mounting holes and top/bottom from rackmounting. Light mark on the left meter panel. Overall pleasant for its age. Nothing drastic. See photos.

220-240V operation only! Not switchable.
