Vintage dbx 165 Compressor / Limiter — Classic OverEasy VCA Sound

For sale is a vintage dbx 165 Compressor/Limiter, one of the most iconic and historically significant analog compressors ever made by dbx.

Introduced in the late 1970s, the dbx 165 was designed as a flagship professional dynamics processor and was the first dbx compressor to feature the now-famous OverEasy compression characteristic. Its combination of the classic dbx VCA, RMS detection, continuously variable compression and adjustable attack/release times made it a serious studio tool for recording, mixing, mastering and broadcast work.

The 165 has a very distinctive character: punchy and controlled when pushed, yet capable of extremely smooth and transparent compression when used more gently. It has remained a respected piece of vintage studio equipment and can still be found in professional studios and high-end collections today.

This is the original dbx 165, not the later 165A. The 165A added the PeakStop limiting circuit, while the original 165 is particularly sought after for its classic, straightforward design and original OverEasy compression circuit.

Condition / Modification

There is one cosmetic/installation issue worth mentioning clearly.

At some point in its previous ownership, the original rear-panel input and output connections were modified to XLR connectors. The previous owner installed the XLR input and output rather roughly/carelessly, so the workmanship around the rear-panel connectors is not particularly neat. This is visible and should be taken into account by a prospective buyer.

The modification is essentially a practical modernization of the original connections — the factory dbx 165 used terminal-strip connections — but the execution is not what one would call a professional-looking conversion.

In other words: this is a genuine vintage dbx 165 with some history, not a museum piece. The rear-panel XLR modification is disclosed honestly and reflected in the condition of the unit.

For someone looking for the real vintage dbx sound rather than a pristine collector’s example, this could be a very interesting piece of studio history.

A proper example of the classic dbx OverEasy era — built when analog dynamics processing was becoming an essential part of professional recording.

Vintage dbx 165. Classic VCA. Classic OverEasy. Classic studio history.

Please see the photos carefully for the exact cosmetic condition and the XLR modification on the rear panel.
