About this listing
The API 525 is a legendary, vintage-style feedback compressor/limiter first designed in the early 1970s and reissued due to popular demand. Known for its unique, "meaty" character and fast action, it is frequently used to add analog warmth to vocals, guitars, and bass. The De-esser is great for vocals or for taming some high end sibilance with any source. The Ceiling feature is great to maintain volume levels while increasing compression. While originally designed for API consoles in the 70s, the modern 525 is an exact reissue based on original blueprints and spec control drawings from the API archives. The 525 features a unique "Ceiling" knob that combines threshold and makeup gain. It allows you to increase compression (lowering the threshold) while simultaneously raising the output level, allowing you to alter dynamics on the fly without changing the overall output volume. The attack time is fixed at a blistering \(15 \mu s\) (microseconds), which is designed to catch the fastest peaks without "pumping," making it excellent for controlling transients on vocals and percussion. The release times (0.1, 0.5, 2, or 2.5 seconds) are not static; they vary with frequency. Lower frequencies release more slowly than higher frequencies for more natural envelope tracking. The backlight on the VU meter could be changed as it will sometimes, only when clicking, turn off and then back on. does not impact performance. The "De-Ess" Function: The unit features a unique "DS" button, which introduces an inverse vocal energy curve filter to the detector circuit, reducing sibilance (harsh "s" sounds) and pop. Many users claim that even with zero gain reduction (no compression), passing audio through the unit adds a desirable analog "color" and thickness due to its discrete circuit design, transformers, and 2510/2520 opamps. The reissue includes a hardwire bypass switch, which completely removes the circuit from the signal path.
