This is a superb 1998 Gibson L-5 Wes Montgomery model built by master luthier James Hutchins during one of the most respected eras of the Gibson Custom Shop. The Wes Montgomery L-5 is one of the most significant archtops in Gibson’s history, created to honour the sound and approach of Wes himself. The single neck pickup configuration, carved spruce top and classic L-5 appointments come together to produce the warm, rounded jazz tone that defined his playing.
This example is in stunning condition and completely original. Hutchins built some of the finest L-5 instruments of the nineties and his work remains highly regarded for its clarity, balance and craftsmanship. The guitar feels light, resonant and beautifully voiced with elegant binding, rich maple figuring and a refined nitro finish.
Tonally the Wes Montgomery L-5 delivers everything players seek in a top tier Gibson archtop. The single neck position humbucker produces a thick, warm and expressive jazz voice with smooth highs, a full midrange and excellent dynamic response. Chords bloom with colour and single note lines have that unmistakable singing quality associated with Wes. The carved spruce top adds acoustic liveliness and depth, making the instrument feel responsive even before it is plugged in. Playability is effortless with a comfortable neck profile, clean frets and low even action across the board.
The guitar presents as a very well preserved example with only minimal signs of handling. It comes in its original brown Gibson case with pink lining along with a spare travel case as pictured. A standout representation of a rare and important model in Gibson’s archtop lineage.
