An excellent preamp, with little use and working superbly. It was created by the late great Dave Hill.
I am downscaling the studio and will be sad to sell off a lot of studio gear.
Here's the info on it.
The Crane Song Flamingo is a high-quality, dual-channel, discrete Class A microphone preamplifier offering up to 66 dB of stepped gain, variable attenuation, and extensive tonal shaping via unique switching options.
Gain Structure and Signal Control
Each channel of the Flamingo uses a stepped gain switch in 6 dB increments, reaching up to 66 dB, followed by a continuously variable attenuator for precise gain trimming. This configuration provides both repeatability and fine control over input levels. The unit also includes independently switchable 48V phantom power and phase reverse on each channel.
Metering and Visual Feedback
For accurate level monitoring, the Flamingo incorporates a dual-channel 22-element LED VU meter, equipped with a dedicated overload indicator to alert users to clipping and enable optimal gain staging.
Switchable Tonal Shaping
The Flamingo’s standout feature is its three distinct tone-shaping switches: SOUND, IRON, and TONE. The SOUND switch changes the amplifier topology, altering the circuit's character. The IRON switch inserts an iron core into the audio path to introduce harmonic coloration. The TONE switch offers three positions—centre for the classic Flamingo sound, right for transparency, and left for increased colouration—providing flexible sonic options from clean to richly saturated.
Input Impedance and Connectivity
A two-position input impedance switch enhances compatibility with different microphone types, including a mode specifically tailored for large diaphragm condenser microphones, following recommendations by David Bock. The Flamingo features transformer-less balanced inputs and outputs, ensuring minimal signal degradation and high fidelity.
Versatility and Application
Designed for flexibility across recording, broadcast, and live reinforcement, the Flamingo offers engineers a reliable, sonically versatile front-end capable of everything from pristine clarity to vintage-style colouration—all accessible through intuitive, front-panel controls.
