This kit belongs to Brian Nevill, a respected London session drummer. Brian acquired the kit from fellow London session drummer JJ Johnson in approximately 1978. JJ Johnson had originally purchased it in 1970.

The drums left the Ludwig factory in 1966 finished in Black Oyster Pearl. During the 1970s, JJ Johnson stripped the finish from the two toms and covered them in black. After purchasing the kit in 1978, Brian had the entire set professionally refinished in white by Pat at the London Drum Centre—a popular and fashionable finish for the era.

In 2008, Brian entrusted the kit to the late Eddie Ryan in Covent Garden, who professionally restored it to its original Delmar Black Oyster Pearl finish (please see images for Eddie's dated label). Since then, the drums have been kept in cases and used only for studio work, which is reflected in the outstanding condition of the wrap.

As part of the restoration, Eddie Ryan also re-cut the bearing edges to original Ludwig specifications, giving the drums an exceptional tone and resonance. He covered the bass drum consolette mounting holes, returning the bass drum to a clean "virgin" appearance. The original mounting points remain visible inside the shell should a consolette ever be refitted, although the original consolette is no longer included with the kit.

There are no extra holes in any of the shells, and the interiors retain their original white factory paint.

A beautiful, great-sounding vintage Ludwig kit with well-documented provenance, professionally restored in 2008 and ready to be played or added to a serious collection. Chrome is in excellent condition.

The kit is available to view and collect by prior arrangement in Ladbroke Grove, London (W11 1QH)Please get in touch to discuss shipping options.

NOTES:

The drums are kept in soft cases which are included in the sale.

The snare drum stand is not included in the sale.
