About This Model

The Joe Meek VC3 is a half-rack channel strip combining a mic preamp, optical compressor, and enhancer section in a single metal chassis unit. Designed by Ted Fletcher, the preamp carries a warm, analogue British character, while the optical compressor uses an LED and photocell circuit to deliver soft-knee style gain reduction with a progressive ratio. Compressor controls include switchable Fast/Slow attack, variable Release, and variable Compression, plus a Bypass button and a single LED for gain reduction metering. The enhancer section — a proprietary sound-shaper found on original VC3 units rather than the later VC3Q — adds presence and definition to the signal. Connectivity includes XLR and Line inputs, Phantom Power, duplicate output jacks, and an Insert point, making it a compact but capable front-end for recording vocals, instruments, or any source that benefits from analogue processing.
