A rare piece of Gibson history, this 1914 Style U Harp Guitar represents one of the most ambitious and ornate instruments ever produced by the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Company. Built between 1902 and 1925, the Style U was Gibson’s answer to what they believed might be the future of the guitar—an evolutionary leap forward. With its ten sub-bass strings and bold silhouette, the Style U was the most expensive guitar Gibson offered until 1934, remaining in their catalogue until 1937.

This example is in remarkably good condition for its age. There are three expertly repaired hairline cracks on the top, all glued, cleated and stable. There’s minor binding separation on the lower body, but the guitar remains structurally sound and otherwise original. There has been a minor repair to an area of tortoiseshell on the 6 string side of the trapeze tailpiece. Most Style U models—this one included—feature carved spruce tops and walnut back and sides, despite maple being listed in early Gibson catalogues.

The neck is a substantial V profile and perfectly straight. Both guitar and harp sides sound rich and full, offering a sonic experience that matches the visual impact. A rare, museum-worthy example of early 20th-century American craftsmanship.

As with all our vintage instruments, this guitar has been given a thorough service by the Vintage Instrument Workshop and is guaranteed for 2 years in line with our vintage instrument warranty. Get an additional 3 years workshop warranty cover with the No.Tom Guitars Extended Warranty.
