Overview

Building on the success of the first few years of Stratocaster production, the 1958 Stratocaster introduced two noteworthy changes. For one, the sunburst finish switched from "2-tone" to "3-tone" and now included red tones along with the black and yellow. The other major change was a switch from the thicker V-shaped neck profile to a thinner profile that would evolve as the year went on.

Years of Production: 1954 - present

Unique to this Year: Introduction of "3-tone" sunburst and switch to thinner neck profile. Also Fender switches to slab Rosewood fingerboard mid-year.

Body Style: Solidbody

Wood Composition: Alder body, Maple neck with Maple fingerboard

Design Elements: Bolt-on neck, dot inlays, 3 single-coil pickups, 3-way pickup selector

Finish Specifications: 1958 marked a transition from the "2-tone" sunburst to an updated "3-tone" sunburst, which incorporated red tones.

Notable Players:  Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix
