Beginning with its first reissues in 2014, Supro has been rolling out the gear tone junkies have been clamoring for, and the 1695T Black Magick combo amp is no different. This high-gain blues rocker will be of particular interest to those looking to channel some Jimmy Page mojo. The amp is, after all, based on one of rock and roll’s holy grail amplifiers: the 1959 Supro Page was known to use which is currently on loan at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Taking the cabinet dimensions of an old Supro ’59 2x10” and replacing the speaker with a 1x12” custom designed Supro BD12, the Black Magick packs 25 watts of British-voiced power. Its cathode-biased, Class-A power section boasts two 6973 tubes for classic midrange grind and impeccably sensitive touch dynamics.
The Black Magick’s preamp section consists of two channels wired in parallel with individual volume controls and a shared tone control. Between these two powerful channels, you basically get double the gain for a rip-roaring classic rock sound, or the opportunity to plug two separate instruments in simultaneously. And of course, no Supro amp would be complete without the brand’s signature tremolo. On the Black Magick, the classic Supro trem is foot-switchable and comes with controls for depth and speed.
