Video: Madame Gandhi on Process and Empowerment in Music Production

When Kiran Gandhi, who performs under the stage name Madame Gandhi, recently swung by the Reverb studio, what started as a conversation about Ableton Live and compositional process quickly turned into something much more. Framing production as both a tool of music-making and creative empowerment, Gandhi gave us some insight into her own journey down the rabbit hole and shared some wisdom on how music culture can evolve to be more inclusive of anyone who wants to share their message through the medium.

Coming from a background as a percussionist, which included stints with M.I.A., Kehlani, and Thievery Corporation, Gandhi has only recently emerged as a producer under her own name. As she describes in the video above, clearing that hurdle of no longer being reliant on others in a production context remains an important step toward creative self-empowerment. For Gandhi, the line between her music and her activism isn't so much hazy as it is non-existent, and she explains how everything she does musically represents her activism and feminism in one way or another.

Be sure to watch the full video above, and check out her brand-new single, "Bad Habits." Go to Madame Gandhi's website here to learn more about this latest release.
