Video: Critter & Guitari Organelle

If you like your synths simple but endlessly customizable, then look no further than the Critter & Guitari Organelle. The Organelle functions not only as a synthesizer with 20 preset patches, but as a processor, sampler and playground for your personal patches as well.

Let’s start with the basics: the Organelle sports two full octaves of sleek wooden keys, four assignable knobs that can function with any parameter, a patch selection knob, basic volume knob and a computer interface. A whole host of inputs and outputs make the Organelle compatible with just about anything you could throw at it. Basic stereo out gives you the ability to make huge soundscapes, and an expression pedal input offers even more parameter control. The Organelle is then topped off with stereo input for signal processing, two USB slots and even an HDMI output.

Where the fun really begins is with Pure Data, a programming language that can be read by the Organelle and which gives you the opportunity to create literally any patch you want. Although the Organelle ships with 20 preset patches, including a stereo arpeggiator, a basic polyphony mode that is the sonic descendent of the Rhodes, a chord roll mode and more, where the Organelle really shines is with its customizable patches. Just create your own with Pure Data and upload them via the USB port, and you’ve got yourself a patch that’s unique to you.

The Organelle even functions as a sampler. For instance, plug in your electric guitar or bass, strum a few notes, and you’ve just created your first sample, which you can process and play with using the keys and parameter knobs. Any sound you’ve ever wanted to create, you can build using the Organelle.
