Moog Releases the Legendary Minimoog Model D as an App

The original release of the Moog Minimoog in 1970 was a seachange in the world of modular synthesizers, making what had been large, expensive instruments into relatively affordable and portable units. Artists from Parliament’s Bernie Worrell to Yes’ Rick Wakeman, from Kraftwerk to J Dilla, would use Minimoog to create enduring works of art across genres.

The 2016 reissue of the Minimoog Model D—the fourth and most popular production run—was set to last two years, before widespread demand depleted Moog’s parts early in June 2017, causing the premature end of the Model D’s reissue.

But for those who may have missed out on the original and the hardware reissue—or could never afford one to begin with—Moog has released its legendary synth as an iOS app. The Minimoog Model D App is available for Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, at just $4.99 USD.

The software emulation has all of the features of the monophonic hardware synths, but also includes extras like a "Chord" mode that allows up to four-note polyphony, as well as a collection of extra effects modules. It comes with 160 presets (with hundreds more available for sale), real-time looping, and supports a slew of connections for easy integrations with DAWs like Apple’s GarageBand, Ableton Live, and other music software.
