What does "Private Stock" really mean to PRS? It's a guitar like this, a truly one-of-a-kind, peerless instrument built to stun and impress.
Paul Reed Smith's team made this incredible 594 after Ish Guitars' Jesse Wilson went hunting in the Private Stock room for a special top. Wilson didn't necessarily want a flame maple, and he didn't want a quilt maple. Instead, as he explains in the video below, he was looking for that elusive, perfect "explode-y top" pattern that's all too rare to find.
He found it in two bookmarked slabs, with one central issue: a funky spot right in the middle of an otherwise gorgeous pattern. The head of the PRS Private Stock operation, Paul Miles, came up with a perfect solution: apply gold leaf to that spot and others, creating a design where gold seems to burst right out of the woodgrain.
They call the full effect a Variegated Gold Leaf and Smoked Burst finish—"variegated," meaning the gold leaf has been treated with heat to reveal green-and-blue lines throughout.
In Paul's words, it's "one of the most beautiful guitars we have ever produced ... even if we could get this piece of wood again, we would never replicate this guitar, it’s a one-of-one."
