This unit has been fully rebuilt and repurposed from its original design. It originally served as a single-input, three-output line amplifier for tape duplication, but has been converted into a true two-channel microphone preamp.
The original Magnecord output transformers have been retained, while new OEP input transformers have been installed. Each channel features a gain control after the first amplification stage, followed by a post-output transformer output attenuator for additional level control. A 20 dB input pad is also provided on each channel. Onboard there is a 5T4 rectifier for B+ and one 6072 and 12AU7 per channel. The 6072 tubes are powered by a DC heater circuit to help with noise.
The front panel includes a global VU meter selector switch, allowing the meter to display either Channel 1 or Channel 2, along with an Off position. The “Monitor” jack, “meter push on” button and knob to the right of the VU meter were not included in the rebuild and do not have a function.
Be sure to check out the demo video, which includes a 40 dB gain test loop along with music program material to give you an idea of the preamp’s performance and frequency response. The response is quite flat, making this a versatile and great-sounding pair of vintage-inspired mic preamps.
