The Fender Super 60 is an all-tube, 60-watt guitar amplifier produced by Fender from 1988 to 1992. It belongs to Fender’s iconic, yet polarizing, "Red Knob" era—a period right after William Schultz bought the company from CBS, during which Fender attempted to modernize its lineup to compete with high-gain amps like Mesa/Boogie.

While historically overlooked and given a mixed reputation by vintage purists, the Super 60 has earned a dedicated following as an affordable "sleeper" amp valued for its punchy midrange, reliable power, and great platform for pedals.

Core Specifications

  • Power Output: 60 Watts RMS into 4 or 8 ohms.
  • Tube Complement: 2 x 12AX7 and 1 x 12AT7 in the preamp; 2 x 6L6GC in the power section.
  • Channels: Two channels (Clean and Footswitchable Overdrive/Gain).
  • Controls: Eight unnumbered red knobs covering Volume, Treble, Mid, Bass (Channel 1), Volume, Gain (Channel 2), Presence, and Reverb (Global).
  • Configurations Available: Most commonly found as a 1x12" combo featuring a Fender Special Design/Eminence speaker, but also sold as a compact standalone amplifier head.
  • Features: Built-in solid-state spring reverb, independent effects loop, dual inputs, and a dedicated line output.

Sound Characteristics & Player Consensus

  • The Cleans: Unlike classic "Blackface" or "Silverface" Fender amps, the Super 60 has less of that traditional, scooped-mid bell sparkle. Instead, the clean channel is warmer, thicker, and highly neutral, making it an excellent, high-headroom pedal platform.
  • The Overdrive: The gain channel is often compared to a Mesa/Boogie-style tone rather than a traditional Fender crunch. It focuses heavily on compressed, fat, mid-heavy saturation with long sustain. It is highly effective for thick classic rock or blues, though some modern players find it slightly dark.
  • In a Mix: Guitarists frequently note that because the amp is packed with midrange, it cuts through a live band mix incredibly well compared to more scooped vintage amps.
