All-Wood Full Boehm Bb Clarinet, Unknown Maker, Matching Serial #28, Low Eb, Fully Overhauled

Overview

This all-wood Full Boehm Bb clarinet of unknown manufacture features matching serial number 28 on both joints, extensive Full Boehm keywork, a low Eb extension, metal-reinforced tenon construction, and a dark-stained blackwood body. Its overall construction resembles an older French professional clarinet, with a substantial feel and comfortable, ergonomic keywork.

The clarinet has been overhauled, fully adjusted, regulated, leak-tested, play-tested, and is ready to play. It has a dark, centered, versatile tone, a strong low register, a powerful low Eb, a singing upper register, very good intonation, and controlled resistance while remaining responsive.

Please refer to photos and demo video for detailed cosmetic condition and playability.

Body & Condition

The body is stained blackwood with visible natural grain and figure. The reverse tapered bore measures approximately 14.9 mm (0.587") at the entry and 15.1 mm (0.594") at the exit. The clarinet includes a newer replacement 65 mm ebony barrel and a newer replacement ringless ebony bell. Both fit properly, complement the clarinet visually, and work well with its tone, response, and intonation.

The instrument has metal tenon rings and metal-lined reinforcement at the top of the lower joint. The reinforced center-joint receiver is structural rather than decorative and helps protect the wood around a vulnerable part of the instrument. The body, bell and barrel may show normal scratches, nicks, scuffs, finish wear, or other minor blemishes from use, but these are cosmetic and do not affect performance.

Additional Notes

The clarinet has a dark and substantial tone suitable for jazz, classical music, and styles in between. Its playing characteristics include a strong, full low register, a powerful low Eb that matches the strength of the surrounding notes, a singing upper register, very good intonation, comfortable keywork, and versatility across a wide range of musical styles.

The unmarked vintage white mouthpiece resembles some older Runyon, Brilhart, or Selmer Goldentone designs, but it has no markings and is not attributed to any specific manufacturer.

Because of its matching two-digit serial number, unusual construction, and lack of identifiable maker markings, the clarinet could conceivably have been a prototype, dealer sample, special-order instrument, or part of a limited production run. This history cannot be confirmed and is presented only as a possibility.

Full Boehm clarinets are increasingly difficult to find. This instrument offers the expanded Full Boehm mechanism and low Eb configuration without attribution to a recognizable French maker.
