Sony TC-755 4 track 10.5" reel to reel tape deck. SERVICED!

This is the Sony TC-755 10.5" reel to reel tape deck from around 1975. It plays and records standard consumer tapes, from 5" reels to 10.5" ones. It runs at 7 1/2 and 3 3/4 IPS, the two standard consumer tape speeds. It's a dual capstan deck, which provides uniform tape tension across the heads, improving wow and flutter and the frequency response.

We picked this up locally from a seller that was downsizing his stereo. As is typical with many RTR decks, this one hadn't been used in a few years, and needed some basic servicing:

-replacement of the main drive belt

-replacement of both pinch rollers

-repair and adjustment of the pinch roller mechanism

-cleaning of all switches and controls

-adjustment of the bias and eq curves, that had been badly misadjusted by the last tech that worked on it. The deck was set up with RTM LPR-35 tape.

The last tech that worked on this deck had set the eq for playback far too high, likely because he ran frequency sweeps at 0db rather than at -10. That saturated the tape, causing high frequency rolloff, and thus he boosted the eq, to the point where the deck was sitting at +12db at 20Khz.

Once properly adjusted, the deck is flat to 22Khz at 7 1/2 IPS, and to 19Khz at 3 3/4. That's outstanding performance for this deck, that normally drops off at 16Khz at 3 3/4.

We test ran the deck for 10 hours to ensure long life.

Cosmetically, the deck is in better than average shape, with a few marks on the front plate. The wood veneer that usually peels off only has one tiny portion missing on the top left corner as shown.

Included with the deck are a new takeup reel, the original Sony NAB adapters (hard to find at this point), and the power cord.
