Here's the history of these speakers:
They were gifted to me by my brother in 1995. He purchased them new in 1984 or 1985, and he enjoyed them up until his amp stopped working after five years or so. Sometime before I took possession of them, the external crossovers were separated from them and were lost track of, so I was given the speakers only. I reached out to Magnepan and they built me a new set of crossovers and I also had them send me a fresh pair of ribbon tweeter assemblies that I had friend swap out with the old cores that I returned to the factory. I bought a high output solid state amp to drive them and the results were great; I was in audiophile heaven up until 2001 when I blew out a tweeter. I temporarily replaced them with a pair of JBL studio monitors that I own which sound really good, and perhaps a bit more clinical, but lack the magical experience that emanates from a set of Maggies.
In 2012 I sold my house and moved across a couple of states. I knew the RG-III's probably would not withstand the rigors of a moving van unless I took action, so I contracted a carpenter/craftsman friend of mine to design & construct custom-made shipping cases for the speakers, floor base plates, and the crossovers. He did a nice job, and the items made that trip and a couple of more relocations without sustaining any harm. Also, the cases saved the speakers from water damage resulting from slow leaking shower supply line that migrated into the adjacent closet where I had them stored. If the speakers were packed in cardboard boxes they would have been ruined, but since they were suspended within the wooden cases, they came out 100% unscathed.
I had the tweeters re-ribboned by a trusted technician in 2016 who consulted with the folks at Magnepan, making sure that the job was done correctly and that the speakers and crossovers conformed to factory specs. In retrospect I should have had him install new grill cloths as the originals have some defects (runs). I upgraded to a pair of ARM Gold Audiophile fuses that I think a had a positive impact on the sound stage projection. Also, my brother turned up with the misplaced original external crossovers, along with the X-01 bi-amp crossover and speaker badges. The X-01 and badges are in the original packaging. These items will be included with the speakers.
The reason that I'm letting these go is that I'm planning to relocate from the east coast out west to the desert. I plan on downsizing a to smaller house, making the Magnepans impractical; they need a big room to sing!
