I am a working drummer and to save my ears, I need hearing protection during practice and live performances. I find monitor speakers on stage just add to my problems with volume control and hearing things clearly over the drums. You know the cycle. They turn up, then you play louder, then they turn up some more, and soon you have cracked cymbals and a nice big headache. Isolating the sound in your ear canal is the only way to go. This is why most touring pros use in-ear solutions. The best in-ears also attenuate ambient sound like earplugs. These feature -26db noise reduction which is as good as some shooter earphones.

I paid $585 for a pair of custom-fit in-ear monitors from a well-known maker and when I got them I was unimpressed. The sound isolation was OK and so was the sound. But nearly $600!! When I found these, which were on sale at the time, they were $100 bucks and they actually blew away my $600 custom fits in terms of sound.

I am an endless globetrotter and was able to make a deal on a large qty of these with the manufacturer directly, in China.

In my experience, the "custom fit" part is mostly nonsense in terms of sound isolation. It’s all about the seal in your ear canal. These have really nice compliant ear cups (including extras) and give you roughly the same seal and noise control (dB reduction). You will love these!

DRUMMER TIP. Mofo Knows Drums. If you want to really do your ears a favor, AND really hear what the soundman is hearing, also get a set of isolation earphones (used for shooting and industrial applications) and wear them over these and you will be able to play full power at a comfortable in-ear volume level, and hear how your drums sound in the mix very clearly, without damaging your ears.
