Description:
Up for sale is a stunning and remarkably well-preserved Ensoniq Mirage digital sampling keyboard. Released in 1984, the Mirage holds massive cultural and historical importance as the world’s very first consumer-grade, affordable sampler. It put the power of 8-bit digital sampling into the hands of everyday musicians and defined the gritty, lo-fi sound of 1980s electronic, industrial, and hip-hop music. Finding one in this condition today is an incredibly rare occurrence.
🎛️ Condition & Upgrades
Considering this machine is over 40 years old, it is in absolutely terrific cosmetic and structural condition. Aside from a minor surface scratch here and there from normal handling over the decades, the chassis is extremely clean. Mechanically and electronically, it is flawless: every single key is level, all physical buttons and parameters respond perfectly, the jacks are clean, and the display functions exactly as it should. The unreliable, mechanical floppy drive has been completely updated with a modern, high-contrast white OLED Gotek Drive running FlashFloppy firmware. It comes pre-loaded with an extensive, professional sound bank library from NESynth on a premium USB drive. It is a true plug-and-play setup that lets you jump straight into authentic 8-bit sampling the moment you unbox it.
ℹ️ Important Note on the Gotek Display Orientation
Please note that due to the internal physical mounting layout of the OLED screen modification, the text initializes upside down. I attempted to update the firmware configuration text file to rotate the display coordinates, but couldn't quite get the software flag to line up, so I have left it exactly as-is. It is purely an aesthetic quirk—the drive is fully stable, reads/writes flawlessly, and navigating the NESynth soundbank folders remains incredibly simple.📚 Included DocumentationThis listing includes a fantastic set of rare, original physical documentation to help you get the most out of this machine:
- The Ensoniq Mirage Musician’s Manual
- The Advanced Sampling Guide
- The Ensoniq Mirage Parameter Reference Guide
All three manuals are in excellent, fully intact, and completely readable condition. They are an invaluable resource for navigating the Mirage’s deep architecture.
⚠️ Buyer Requirements & Seller Protection Policy
Please Read Carefully Before Purchasing:
The Ensoniq Mirage is a sophisticated piece of early 1980s technology. It operates on a unique hexadecimal menu system and requires patience and a specific workflow. The buyer must be thoroughly familiar with how these vintage machines operate, or be fully committed to learning the workflow, prior to purchase. I am a meticulous collector and seller. I previously sold a virtually flawless Mirage rack unit that was either broken immediately by an inexperienced user or targeted for a parts scam. Because of that incredibly unfortunate experience, I strictly enforce the following protocol:
- Pre-Shipping Verification: Immediately prior to packing, I will be recording comprehensive, time-stamped videos of this exact unit being packaged and thoroughly demonstrating it as fully functional and operational.
- Bulletproof Packing: I take immense pride in packing heavy vintage synthesizers. This keyboard and its documentation will be heavily layered in multi-layered professional padding to ensure it arrives exactly as pictured.
- Final Sale: Due to the age of the components and the nature of vintage electronics, this unit is being sold strictly as-is with no returns.
This is a beautiful piece of synthesizer history that I am incredibly sad to let go, but other financial priorities must take precedent at this time. I want this to go to a great home where it will be appreciated. I am more than happy to answer any technical questions or provide additional custom videos upon request.
