The dbx 166XL is a dual-channel compressor/limiter/gate with independent controls per channel plus a stereo couple switch that links detection via true RMS power summing. Each channel has threshold, ratio, attack, release, auto mode, output gain, expander/gate threshold and ratio, plus OverEasy or hard-knee compression and a PeakStop limiter. Sidechain insert on TRS allows external keying or filtering. It runs on standard IEC power and fits a single rack space. The gate has fast attack under 500 µs and adjustable release, while the compressor offers program-dependent timing from a few milliseconds up to several seconds. Metering shows gain reduction plus threshold activity for both compressor and gate sections.
