The dbx 166XL is a dual-channel compressor/limiter/gate with stereo linking via true RMS power summing. Each channel has independent threshold, ratio, attack, release, and output gain controls plus OverEasy or hard-knee compression modes, an Auto switch for program-dependent timing, and a PeakStop limiter. Sidechain inserts and separate LED metering for gain reduction, compressor threshold, and gate threshold make setup straightforward for live or studio use. It runs on standard IEC power and mounts in 1U rack space. The expander/gate section offers adjustable threshold and fixed 10:1 ratio with fast attack under 500 µs.
