Up for grabs is a customized ripper of a MIJ Fender Mustang. Here’s the background: it started life as a 2007 MG-69 MIJ Mustang and was refinished, customized, and played a lot in Japan. The original owner refinished it in a lightly sparkly deep blue that has since had some checking/patina and hand-painted a competition stripe (that looks convincing from a distance), threw a humbucker in the neck, fabricated a white pickguard for it out of thick white plastic, and replaced the original tuners with vintage West German Schallers. I’ve since taken out the humbucker, rerouted the pickguard, and installed a TV Jones Magna’Tron in the neck. What remains is an entirely one-of-a-kind Mustang that sounds, plays, and looks great--and still has that Japanese Fender quality feel.
Play and sound-wise, the neck is a highlight; it’s thin, fast, and smooth with a deep yellow color and glassy finish on the headstock and back. The fretboard has a nice chord-friendly curve to it too. It absolutely plays like a Mustang should and the tuners handle vibrato use better than the stock tuners. The Magna’Tron gives the neck some thickness while not sacrificing clarity and the DiMarzio single-coil in the bridge is hot and chimey. It’s a different voice than your standard Mustang but works well together. The pickup selector switch was also replaced recently. Check the photos for the action and there are no dead spots or unwarranted buzzing. Like all guitars, you may want to set it up to your own tastes but it plays well right now.
Condition-wise, it’s in good shape and you can check the photos for more granular details. Note that most of the work on this guitar was not professional level inside and out from the finish to soldering (check photos), so expect the character that comes with things like a non-perfectly made pickguard and refinishing job. The Schallers have some tarnish and patina on them but it doesn’t affect their stability. Some of the screws which attach to the body have outworn their holes so they can pulled out with pliers and pushed in after but most still can be screwed in and out successfully. The pickguard has a little hump where it goes over some wires and could be easily fixed/body routed by the next owner for some more room.
Extras: This purchase also comes with a gig bag, vibrato arm, an complementary-colored Ernie Ball strap, tons of knobs and single-coil covers, and a cream cover for the Magna’Tron I special ordered. It’s really a super solid and customizable guitar platform.
