We are reeltoreeltech.com. We buy, sell and service all types of reel to reel tape decks, from tube mono machines to 2" 24 track decks. We stock around 200 decks at all times, and are dealers for ATR and RTM tape.
This is the Ampex ATR-800 3 speed (7/1 2 to 30 IPS) 2 track 10.5" mastering tape deck. It was designed by Ampex, but made by Teac for Ampex, and it was the last reel to reel deck that Ampex offered, from 1980 to around 1990. It's truly a pro deck, and shares a lot of features of the earlier (and much more expensive!) ATR 102.
It has switchable NAB and IEC equalization curves at the flick of two switches on the electronics motherboard.
It has 3 direct drive motors, has modules for both the transport and audio electronics, making service easy, and has swappable head blocks for easy conversion to a different track/tape width format.
We received a bunch of these decks in from our 'Texas Barn Find' 3 years ago, and we're just getting to some of these decks at this point. We have about 4 of them left, and we expect to get all of them running.
This deck hadn't been turned on in quite some time (10 years?) so we did some extensive servicing to it, which included:
-new pinch roller
-recapping of all audio PC boards in the audio chain, and replacement of all the tantalum capacitors that have a tendency to short and blow up. Only name brand caps from Mouser were used (Nichion, Wima, etc).
-replacement of all 6 VU meter lights
-resoldering of all Molex connectors in the power supply section, that develop cracked solder joints
-replacement of two 'manual/cal' toggle switches in the electronics section that were intermittent.
-a full setup on all speeds, using MRL calibration tapes
-calibrated to RTM 911 tape.
-test run of the deck for 12 hours, to ensure long term reliability.
-powder coating of the top transport cover, as it was fairly scratched from normal use.
The deck has XLR inputs and outputs, and the deck is set up for +3db, ideal for this deck.
Whether you want to master on this deck in your studio, or want to play audiophile tapes at home, this is a great deck to do it with. The frequency rivals that of the more expensive Studer decks as well as the fabled ATR 102, and the massive amount of adjustments within the deck's electronics allows a qualified tech to set the deck up for any tape formula desired.
Cosmetically the deck is in nice shape, with a few minor scuffs and scratches from normal use.
Included with the deck are a new 10.5" takeup reel, two Otari NAB hubs that work great on these decks, and a roll of our new RTRTech tape.
The deck is too heavy to be sent via courier, so it needs to go via truck, and the price quoted is to a truck dock near you. The deck needs to be picked up within 48 hours of arriving (we'll message you), or storage charges apply that are NOT included with this listing. A residential delivery is also available, but can add up to $200 extra.
In accordance with US customs, we will need a business tax number (EIN) or your SSN to get the deck through customs.
