This is a handmade double-sided steel tongue drum made by Sugai Percussion in Tokyo, Japan.

This model has two playable tone fields: one side has a 6-note Ryukyu scale, and the other side has an 8-note major scale. Both sides resonate with each other through the body, creating a unique sound character that is different from a standard single-sided tongue drum.

When the noise function is turned OFF, the sound is soft, deep, and dreamlike. The resonance between the two sides creates a gentle, floating tone, almost like hearing the instrument underwater.

When the noise function is turned ON, the character changes completely. It produces an aggressive, trance-like, shaking metallic noise that gives this instrument a sound unlike ordinary tongue drums. The center bolt allows the player to adjust the noise/resonance character.

This instrument is also equipped with an output jack, so it can be connected to recording equipment, effects, or an amplifier.

The 6-note side also has a short, percussive accent tone in the center. This sound has less sustain and can be used as a rhythmic accent.

Sugai Percussion has been making steel tongue drums for more than 15 years. I have made over 1,800 tongue drums by myself, one by one, in my workshop.

My approach to tongue drums is not limited to soft healing sounds. I also focus on rhythm, response, percussive expression, and unique sound textures that are not found in ordinary tongue drums.

Each instrument is handmade individually, so small differences in sound, finish, and appearance may occur.
