TLDR: 100% All original. Has early 70's guild hardshell case. Very good condition with plenty of honest wear, lacquer checking, and buckle rash.
An all-original Guild Starfire III in 100% working order. Grab this piece while you can, these are seriously underpriced and getting harder to find in clean, original condition.
Where do I even start? Old Guilds are the wave. There’s a reason this legendary guitar was played by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Tom Fogerty. It’s incredibly versatile, sleek, and just effortless to play. This guitar can cover everything, jazz, rockabilly, hard rock, country, lo-fi, even shreddy stuff.
My favorite part is the sleek single-cut thinline body paired with the Anti-Hum humbuckers. They’re some of the most articulate pickups I’ve ever heard. No joke, the attack of each note is so clear and pleasing that it’s hard to put down. The juxtaposition of the aged mahogany construction and these rich pickups gives this guitar an incredibly clean, glassy, open tone. I truly think it’s the old wood, dried out over decades, combined with the parallel bracing and Guild-made pickups that make it ring like a bell.
From the bottom of my heart, if you’re looking to pick up a Guild, get a Starfire. I personally love the single-cut design, so I lean toward the I to III models, but this one absolutely sings.
Some quick history, the Guild Starfire debuted in 1960 and was built in Guild’s Hoboken, New Jersey factory, where some of their most iconic instruments were crafted with incredible attention to detail. While companies like Fender under CBS and Gibson were mass-producing guitars during Beatlemania, Guild focused on high-quality builds and craftsmanship.
The Starfire III is the two-pickup model with a Guildsby vibrato, offered in finishes like black, emerald green, sunburst, and cherry, the most popular. In 1963, Guild moved away from DeArmond pickups and introduced their Anti-Hum humbuckers, which offered a stronger midrange suited for the honky, rockabilly tones of the era.
Ultimately, the Guild I’m selling today represents the pinnacle of their golden-era craftsmanship. It features a laminated mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck, a beautiful bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard, and a stunning headstock with the Chesterfield inlay. The 9.5 inch radius feels modern and super comfortable. The frets have plenty of life left, around 70 to 80 percent, and it plays beautifully.
Tech notes: All original parts down to every screw. Beautiful and bright cherry finish, lots of finish wear and lacquer checking all around the instrument. No breaks or repairs, no binding issues, binding has aged over time in color. No scratchy pots, linear increase in volume.
