Don't let the headstock badge fool you—this 2002 Squier Standard Precision Bass Special in classic 3-Color Sunburst is a serious, hot-rodded player's instrument that punches well above its weight class. Weighing in at a very comfortable 8 lbs, 10 oz, it combines a fast, slim Jazz Bass neck profile with a versatile P/J pickup layout that lets you seamlessly blend tones for any session.
Outfitted with professional hardware upgrades and custom luthier fretwork, this bass delivers incredible punch, sustain, and effortless, low-action playability. Whether you need a reliable, hum-free recording studio workhorse that cuts through a mix or an inspiring, lightweight daily player, you would be hard-pressed to find a better-playing or sounding instrument at this price point.
Upgrades & Custom Modifications
This bass has been thoughtfully upgraded with top-tier components to maximize sustain, tuning stability, and tonal range:
- Bridge Pickup (J-Position): Upgraded to a Seymour Duncan STK-J2 Classic Stack Jazz Bass pickup. Delivers authentic, punchy J-Bass growl and articulation with zero 60-cycle hum.
- Middle Pickup (P-Position): Upgraded to a Squier Classic Vibe '70s Split-Coil P-Bass pickup for warm, rich, vintage-voiced fundamental thump.
- Hardware / Bridge Upgrade: Fitted with a genuine Fender American Standard Bridge, offering superior mass, rock-solid saddle stability, and string-through-body routing for increased acoustic resonance and sustain.
- Luthier Fretwork: The frets received a professional precision fret level, crown, and dress by independent luthier Shawn May, allowing for exceptionally clean, low action across the entire neck.

Workbench Inspection & Setup
Prior to listing, this instrument underwent a thorough workbench inspection at Eric's Gear so you can plug in and play immediately upon unpacking:
- Frets: The leveled frets have been polished to a mirror shine for smooth string bending and zero grit.
- Strings: Currently strung with a very cool set of NOS (New Old Stock) early-2000s Fender 8250 Nickel Roundwounds (.045–.110) on a round core with a tapered E string. They offer fantastic suppleness and rich fundamental punch (very similar in tone and feel to modern DR Pure Blues).
- Intonation & Stability: Intonates accurately across the entire neck. Tuning stability is rock-solid, and the truss rod adjusts smoothly and reliably in both directions.
Condition & Full Disclosure Report
- Overall Structural Condition: Excellent. The neck is straight, tuning machines hold pitch tightly, and all electronics function flawlessly with clean, scratch-free pots and a snug output jack.
- Cosmetics & General Wear: The 3-Color Sunburst finish presents beautifully, showing normal, light play wear consistent with a well-cared-for 2002 instrument (e.g., minor surface swirls and light surface scratches from normal use).
- Full Disclosure on String-Thru Modification: When upgrading to the Fender American Standard bridge, string-through mounting holes were drilled through the body. While the bridge installation itself is rock-solid, structurally sound, and intonates perfectly, the drilling and ferrule placement on the back of the body show cosmetic DIY imperfections and slight misalignment (please inspect the close-up photos of the rear body). This is strictly a visual flaw on the back of the instrument and has zero impact on structural integrity, tuning stability, or playability.
