Up for sale is a Brownface Fender 6G3 Deluxe dated August 1963 based on the chassis stamp. This is likely one of the final productions of this model prior to the changeover to the Blackface Deluxe model. The amp is in wonderful shape for its age with nearly perfect grill cloth and tolex as you can see in the photos. Original leather handle still in good shape overall, original Victoria Luggage Company cover included, and original foot pedal as well!
The amp has the original power and output transformers along with the majority of the components inside the amp. The original speaker cone had some major rotting issues and couldn't be saved so the speaker has been reconed. The recone was done by Weber Speakers and was set up with a similar Oxford style cone replacement with original basket maintained. The speaker sounds excellent!
The amplifier has a fiberglass board mounted in place of the original fiberboard with the original components carefully mounted back on it. The board was custom made based on the original fiberboard with the same hole layout and mounting points. This change was made due to DC voltage present on the board even after many attempts to clean and soak the board in isopropyl alcohol with heat gun. The DC voltage was causing a buzzing sound when playing notes so the fiberglass board took care of this. This board will never have issues with DC voltage leaking on it like the majority of vintage Fender amps have over time due to moisture infiltrating the fiberboards.
Some of the old wiring was also leaking voltage so several of the cloth wires were swapped for nearly identical cloth wire. A few resistors were replaced with vintage Allen-Bradley carbon comp resistors due the old resistors drifting out of spec. No expense was spared on any of the replacement parts and the original issues have been resolved with these changes.
The power cord has been swapped for a 3-prong grounded type for safety with hot going to fuse then to power switch. The fuse is the correct 2 amp rating. The ground switch has been disconnected since it isn't necessary and the "death cap" has been left in place for aesthetics only.
The output tubes and rectifier tubes are aftermarket Russian-made while the preamp tubes are all vintage (RCA, Sylvania, and Tesla).
A bias pot was added for easier bias adjustment. The amplifier has been biased to around 125v at the wall currently. This may need adjustment based on wall voltage readings.
All electrolytic capacitors have been swapped out for new F&T capacitors in the "dog house" and MOD capacitors for the cathode bypass positions. The bias capacitor was swapped for Nichicon and the original bias diode was also replaced for safety.
All original parts (at least the ones included when I purchased the amp), wire, and the original fiberboards will be included in a bag inside the amp in case there's a need to restore these in the future. However, I'd advise against this if the amp is intended to be played since the original issues will return.
This amp is ready to be played and loved for years to come! It'll do the classic ZZ Top sound and sounds like a mini-Marshall with it's aggressive breakup and rich touch sensitivity. I will certainly miss this amp and I'm hesitant to let it go. I hope it goes to someone who will treat it well and get to enjoy it as I have.
