unmistakably vintage. The Telefunken D9/A is one of the earliest backlit designs from the brand, combining functional engineering with a striking front-facing aesthetic. It is a microphone that immediately signals its time. increasingly harder to find in working condition. those models are unfortunately not as reliable as the D9 models to follow decades later.

OPTICAL CONDITION

Good to fair condition.

  • One crack on the top section (cosmetic, does not pass through the housing)
  • Light scratches on the back
  • General signs of age and handling throughout

TECHNICAL CONDITION

working - with subtle limitations.

  • Refurbished
  • Converted to XLR
  • Internal foam replaced
  • Internally cleaned

The microphone operates reliably. Tonally, this particular example feels somewhat bass-limited, with the effective response subjectively beginning around ~300 Hz. Whether this is due to capsule aging or natural low-end roll-off typical of the model is difficult to state with certainty.

Despite this, it remains a solid, usable microphone with a clear and focused character. and reasonable noise to signal ration.

BUILD & DESIGN

The form factor is bold and slightly unconventional compared to later backlit style dynamics. It feels very much like a transitional design from early broadcast technology into more stage-oriented forms. featuring both an attached cable and a small touches DIN connector. also a Music/Speech (MT) switch in the upper section. In this unit, the switch produces only a subtle attenuation effect — noticeably smaller than expected. This may be due to aging filter components or simply the already lean low-end response of this example.

Capsule

  • Dynamic capsule
  • Cardioid-type behavior (typical for the model series)

The capsule delivers a mid-focused response with controlled low-end presence.

Circuit

  • Passive dynamic design
  • balanced transformer output
  • No active electronics

FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Estimated Frequency Response:
300 Hz – approx. 11,000 Hz

  • Reduced low-frequency extension
  • Mild upper-mid presence
  • Gentle high-frequency roll-off

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS

The sound is mid-forward and controlled.

  • Noticeable low-end restraint
  • Clear vocal intelligibility
  • Subtle top-end presence
  • Tight and focused

Because of the perceived bass attenuation, it works well for:

  • Lo-fi textures
  • Situations where low-end buildup needs control
