This Fender Vibro Champ is a genuine mid-1966 blackface example, serial A12259, and a classic illustration of how much tone Fender managed to pack into its smallest professional amplifier. Compact, expressive and endlessly useful, the Vibro Champ holds a special place in the Fender lineup as the smallest amp to feature true tube-driven vibrato.
The tube chart clearly shows the AA764 circuit designation along with the PE date code. Fender’s two-letter chart system places PE firmly in 1966, which aligns perfectly with the A-series serial number and blackface cosmetics. Together, these details strongly confirm this amp as an authentic mid-1966 Vibro Champ rather than a later silverface transition example.
In the Fender range of the time, the Vibro Champ sat below the Princeton and Deluxe, but it was never short on character. Rated at around 5 watts through a single 6V6, it delivers classic blackface clarity at low volumes and smooth, harmonically rich breakup when pushed. The onboard tube vibrato is a standout feature - lush, warm and organic, adding movement and depth without ever feeling artificial or overbearing.
This example retains its original speaker, an important factor in both tone and collectability. Original Vibro Champ speakers contribute to the amp’s signature sound - slightly compressed, sweet in the top end and very responsive to touch. Clean tones are glassy and articulate, while overdriven sounds are thick and musical, making this amp a favourite for recording, home use and low-volume sessions where larger amps simply can’t be opened up.
Finished in black tolex with silver grille cloth, the amp presents as an honest vintage piece, carrying the wear and patina you’d expect from nearly six decades of life without appearing tired or abused. It feels exactly like what it is - a real blackface Fender that’s been used, enjoyed and preserved rather than over-restored.
The Vibro Champ’s reputation has only grown over time. Once sold as a student amp, it’s now widely regarded as one of Fender’s most practical and musical designs, prized by players, producers and collectors alike for its purity of tone and simplicity.
A highly desirable and increasingly scarce blackface Fender, this 1966 Vibro Champ is a superb example of Leo Fender’s minimalist brilliance.
