Key features of the Proteus 2:
- It was an orchestral sound module, offering high-quality orchestral samples for under $2000 for the first time.
- 32-voice polyphony
- 16-part multitimbral
- 4 MB of orchestral sounds (expandable to 8 MB in the XR version)
- 192 presets (384 in the XR version)
- 6 assignable audio outputs
- Launch price was $1495 ($1795 for the XR model)
The Proteus 2 was part of E-mu's successful line of rack-mounted synth modules that began with the Proteus 1 in 1989. It was discontinued around 1996. Full specs are easily searchable online.
I have checked that this is working by connecting a MIDI keyboard and trying presets at random and the built in demo and all that I tried worked perfectly - it was quite a nostalgia trip! Note that there is a small issue with the display (as shown in the photo) but that doesn't affect the unit's operation in any way.
